4 companies in Tucson race to build a self-driving vehicle

According to Larry Head, interim department head of the systems and industrial engineering department at the University of Arizona in Tucson, autonomous vehicles would give American forces the means to penetrate deep behind enemy lines to gather intelligence, deliver supplies and rescue soldiers like those who went missing in May. "And if an unmanned vehicle hits an IED, nobody dies," Head said.
For about a year now, he has been working closely with a handful of tech companies - Tuscon-based Raytheon, Preferred Chassis Fabrications, Tucson Embedded Systems, UA and the Burlington, Mass., technology firm iRobot Corp., the company that brought us the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner - to develop Congress' dream vehicle. Calling themselves Team Scorpion, they all are part of the Urban Challenge, a biennial competition administered by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the central research arm of the Defense Department, since 2003.

Tucson Embedded Systems,Inc(TES)presents a briefing to the American Helicopter Society |
| |
|
On 3 May 2007, Tucson Embedded Systems, Inc. (TES) presented the “Capability Driven Architecture: An Approach to Airworthy Reusable Software” to the American Helicopter Society in Virginia Beach, Virginia at its 63rd Annual AHS International Conference. TES developed this “Capability Driven Architecture" in response to a request by the US Army Program Manager for Aviation Mission Equipment to find a way to reduce cost, schedule and risk in the integration of common components onto various platforms through software reuse in support of their Common Software Initiative (CSI). TES demonstrated the architecture by integrating the capabilities of two Army tactical radios onto four different Aviation platforms employing different operating systems and verifying each integration by using one automated test suite. A great amount of cost savings is made in documentation reuse too.
Other presenters included NASA Ames Research Center, SAIC, Rockwell Collins-Ft. Collins, the Boeing Company-Mesa, US Army AMRDEC, and Lockheed Martin-Owego. Attendees included representatives from the U.S. Army’s Product Manager for Aviation Mission Equipment (PM-AME), the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD), and a host of industry partners.
